The new name reflects a thoughtful and well-considered choice.
Founded in 1979, Teatro Pubblico Pugliese has continually evolved while remainingfaithful to its original nature: a consortium of local public bodies and the PugliaRegion. Throughout its history, it has consistently pursued objectives of publicinterest in the fields of performing arts, culture and the promotion of culturalheritage.
A consortium is a space for sharing among those who recognise a common vision:embracing the cultural life of the Puglia Region in its entirety, engaging both citizensand visitors, and giving rise to a wide range of actions and projects.
Over the years, the mandates entrusted to the organisation by the Puglia Regionhave multiplied and diversified.
Since 2017, Teatro Pubblico Pugliese has been officially recognised as a RegionalConsortium for Arts and Culture, with the aim of effectively implementing theRegion’s strategic policies in the fields of arts and culture.
Puglia Culture builds on the extensive experience of the consortium ofmunicipalities founded in 1979—the year Teatro Pubblico Pugliese wasestablished—which went on to become one of the first multidisciplinary circuitsin Italy to be recognised by the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) for the quality of itsactivities and network. Today, the consortium brings together 75 membermunicipalities.
The network curates and delivers theatre seasons across the region, encompassingtheatre, contemporary dance, music, contemporary circus, and performances forchildren and families. It also promotes a wide range of audience developmentinitiatives, including projects addressing emerging areas such as cultural welfareand accessibility.
Since 2005, this experience has been further strengthened through regional andEuropean projects. Within the framework of European cooperation, Puglia Culture
has developed numerous partnerships with EU and non-EU countries, includingPortugal, Lithuania, Cyprus, Greece, Croatia, Albania and Montenegro, involvingregions, municipalities, and a broad range of public and private stakeholders.
Building on this legacy, Puglia Culture continues to embrace new challenges. Onenotable example is the strengthening of the regional music system, supportedthrough targeted initiatives for its growth and development. In 2010, Puglia Soundswas launched as a comprehensive set of tools designed to support regionalmusic professionals, as well as Apulian music and musicians, across allstages of their creative, production and internationalisation processes. In thesame context, Medimex was established to welcome the global music industry toPuglia, positioning the region as a hub for exchange, dialogue and shared growth.
Today, Puglia Culture brings together the experience of the performing arts circuitand the regional music system, while expanding its mission to include the promotionand enhancement of the region’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
Puglia Culture continues to grow as an organisation that designs, produces andmanages a wide range of cultural activities, including exhibitions, meetings, conferences and festivals. It supports and develops the cultural and creativeindustries of Puglia through initiatives aimed at strengthening the regional liveperformance sector, supporting artistic productions and fosteringinternationalisation. The organisation also develops and delivers audience development andeducation projects, offering innovative services and tools for schools.
Live performance plays a central role in the development of experimental and pilotinitiatives in the field of cultural welfare. This approach is understood as anintegrated model for promoting the well-being and health of individuals andcommunities through practices rooted in the visual and performing arts and incultural heritage.Puglia Culture is also actively engaged in the field of books and reading at multiplelevels. At regional level, it contributes to the implementation of the Puglia Region’spolicies in this area. At sector level, it works in close coordination with publishers’associations in Puglia, takes part in major national and international book fairs, andorganises events and opportunities for authors, publishers and audiences to meet.In parallel, it invests resources in initiatives aimed at promoting books and readingacross the region.
This marksthe founding year of the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese, which over the years has become one of Italy’s leading multidisciplinary theater networks recognized by the Ministry of Culture for its activities and network, and which currently includes 75 member municipalities.
The network curates and organizes seasons of theater, contemporary dance, music, contemporary circus, and theater for children and families throughout the region, as well as a wide range of audience-engagement activities that address unexplored areas such as cultural welfare and accessibility.
We are becoming a Public Economic Entity: the consortium pursues objectives of public interest in the fields of entertainment, the arts, and the promotion of cultural heritage.
Since 2005, it has built on these experiences and embraced new challenges through European projects. Through European cooperation, it has developed countless partnerships with EU and non-EU countries such as Portugal, Lithuania, Cyprus, Greece, Croatia, Albania, and Montenegro, involving regions, municipalities, and other public and private entities.
The Puglia Region becomes the majority shareholder in the intermunicipal consortium.
It is the regional music system that is being infused with new energy to support its organization and development. In 2010, Puglia Sounds was launched, defining itself as a set of tools serving regional operators in the music sector as well as Apulian music and musicians in their creative, production, and internationalization endeavors. And it is to welcome the global music industry to Apulia and present it as a place for exchange and shared growth that Medimex was created.
Puglia Culture supports and develops the cultural and creative industries sector in Puglia through projects that promote the local performing arts ecosystem, support local live performance productions, and fosterthe internationalization of the performing arts scene.
Over the years, the organization has seen its mandates from the Puglia Region expand and diversify. Since 2017, in fact, the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese has been designated as the Regional Consortium for the Arts and Culture. This designation enables it to effectively pursue strategic regional policies in areas such as the arts and culture. Puglia Culture is dedicated to promoting the region’s tangible and intangible heritage and continues to grow by organizing, producing, and managing a wide range of activities, including exhibitions, meetings, conferences, and festivals.
Puglia Culture is active in the specific field of books and reading at multiple levels: at the regional level, byimplementing the Puglia Region’s policies in this sector; at the organizational level, by coordinating with Apulian publishers’ associations to participate in major book fairs and by organizing events and opportunities for authors, publishers, and the public to meet; and by investing resources in the promotion of books and reading throughout the region.
Live performance is also the primary tool in the development of experimental and pilot initiatives within the field of cultural welfare —a concept that refers to an integrated model for promoting the well-being and health of individuals and communities through practices rooted in the visual and performing arts and cultural heritage.
Puglia Culture is our new name, chosen to better reflect the diversity of areas inwhich we operate—mirroring the many cultures that shape the life of our Region. These include the Theatre Circuit and Seasons, the Music System, Heritage
and Visual Arts, Books and Reading, Training and the Cultural and CreativeIndustries, as well as Cultural Welfare.
From Teatro Pubblico Pugliese to Puglia Culture, we continue to act, promote andnurture diverse forms of creativity, guided by a shared vision.
